Schnorr and Taproot: scaling Bitcoin's base layer

Quick Take

  • Schnorr signature compatibility and Taproot support are two upgrades to Bitcoin that would lead to significant improvements in the network’s scalability and privacy.
  • These upgrades were formally suggested in BIPs 340, 341, and 342. There are plans to push these changes to the network through a soft fork.
  • Cross-input aggregation, one of the most powerful theoretical improvements enabled by Schnorr signatures, is not included in this suggested upgrade.
